The Daintar Pass (4500m), which connects the upper Naltar Valley to the Daintar Nala in Lower Nagyr, is a challenging passageway tucked away in the craggy terrain of the Karakoram. With its distinct challenges and beautiful panoramas, this pass has attracted explorers and thrill seekers since the late 19th century.
In 1893, when George Cockerill successfully traversed it, the pass initially gained notoriety. He vividly characterizes the south side of the pass as being “almost vertical,” giving some indication of how challenging this terrain is. Although it’s vital to remember that the pass is steep on both sides, many people believe the ascent going north to south to be a little easier.
Trevor Braham, a seasoned Himalayan explorer who spent many years in the area, provides more insight into the difficulties presented by Daintar Pass. He depicts the northern descent as a 230-meter stretch of broken rock ending in a large fissure at a dramatic 50-degree inclination. The daunting character of the pass is well depicted in these descriptions.
Daintar Pass is a test of tenacity and bravery; it is not for the faint of heart. However, it provides a chance to experience the unadulterated, untamed splendor of the Karakoram. The pass promises those who take the risk to travel there not only physical difficulties but also unforgettable moments of awe and wonder in the middle of one of the most spectacular mountain ranges on earth.
